Sometimes, people like to feel pretty. Yeah, people: girls and boys of every age can appreciate a bit of finery with which to strut their stuff. In today’s GeekDame’s Holiday Gift-Giving Guide for the Discerning Geek, I have just the list of such shiny items as will put stars in the eyes and a spring in the step of even the vainest geek. If you’ve got one such on your holiday list, read on!
Please note that none of my section titles are intended to be gender-specific.
FOR THE ONES WHO WANT TO FEEL PRETTY, OH SO PRETTY, OH SO PRETTY AND WITTY AND BRIGHT:
Essentially anything from the Imagination Emporium on Etsy! I’ve ordered stuff from her before and can attest as to the quality of the product; you can see the diversity of fandoms she covers for yourself! From Doctor Who to Firefly, from The Princess Bride to Harry Potter, from Wicked to BSG, the Imagination Emporium can deck your giftee out with some of the best textual in-jokes and references around.
Raven Hanna had a brilliant idea when she opened Made with Molecules, and I think a wide variety of geeks can agree. There’s something compelling about the naked skeletons of chemical relationships, and rendering them in silver and wearing them on our bodies is awesomeness squared. If you’re looking for something for a chemist or biology geek, or someone who loves unique gifts, you can’t go wrong with these pieces. Featured molecules include caffeine (pictured above), serotonin (happiness), theobromine (chocolate), capsaicin (hot!), and more.
You can never have enough dice. Or maybe that’s the lapsed tabletop gamer in me. Still! If you know a tabletop gamer, it’s essentially guaranteed that they share my motto – in fact, if you know a tabletop gamer, why are you still reading this? You should already have clicked over to Think Geek to purchase the d20 pendant above! Or, if you’d like more of a selection, head on over to World of Dice, and peruse their selection of pendants, earrings, cufflinks, tie-bars, and more! Some of them wholly incorporate the dice into their designs, and others leave them “game ready” like the pendant above – oh yes, my friends, that die can be removed! Brilliant. Each type also comes in a variety of sides, from d4s to d20s.
Of course, this guide would be ridiculously remiss if I failed to mention you can purchase your giftee the One Ring. Are they fans of Lord of the Rings? Do they own this? If not, you are now duty bound to procure it for them. Just hope the mailman isn’t oddly compelled to swing by Mordor and drop it into Mount Doom on the way to your doorstep.
FOR THE ONES WHO WANT TO STYLE AND PROFILE WITH A TOUCH OF NERDY BADASSERY:
Adrian Prazen over at Etsy has a shop hawking heavy cuffs featuring sigils from the Star Wars and Doctor Who universes. These bronze cuffs are amazing – incredibly cleanly cast and a bold fashion statement. I WANT THEM ALL, MY PRECIOUS. If is quite possible any Star Wars or Doctor Who fans you’re shopping for will as well, but make sure they’re the type who enjoy pulling off serious adornments. Styles include the Rebel Alliance cuff above, and an opposite one for the Galactic Empire, not to mention Jedi- and Sith-specific models. For the Gallifrey-lovers, there’s even one bearing the Seal of Rassilon.
Speaking of cuffs, yours just aren’t adorned if you aren’t sporting some of these amazingly geek chic cufflinks. Retro geek, even! These Space Invaders cufflinks are absolute conversation-starters. And did you know there are Transformers cufflinks out there? Star Trek as well, naturally? In fact, whatever fandom your giftee is into, just search that + “cufflinks” and I’m sure you’ll find a winner.
These are polo shirts. With embroidered Doctor Who-relevant items. Polo shirts. With the TARDIS and Daleks. Do I really need to say more? Okay. Fine. GIFTINATE!
So, Adidas recently released a shoe inspired by Luke Skywalker’s time on Hoth – named, appropriately, the Hoth Skywalker. That kind of themed footwear is brilliant. You can also find Converse patterned with prominent DC superheroes, such as Superman and Batman. Batman seems to have more shoes available, because, c’mon. He is the bat; he is the night.
FOR THE ONES WHO WANT THEIR GEEK STYLE TO BE EXTREMELY REFERENTIAL AND MORE OF AN IN-JOKE:
People wear bowties now. Bowties are cool.
If your giftee owns a seersucker suit, get them this hat.
Do not be surprised if you giftee excuses him or herself after receiving these. They’ll be back.
Let your Constable, er, giftee know you remembered to get them a gift for Time Day.
FOR THE ONES WHO PRIZE COMFORT, AND WHAT IS THIS CHIC BUSINESS ANYWAY OR FOR THOSE WHO JUST WANT TO STAY WARM:
Look, no one needs an excuse for Star Wars-themed bathrobes, especially when they come in Jedi and Sith flavors. These promise to be amazingly soft, and forget being only a bathrobe – I call these loungewear. Of course, if for some reason your giftee is in the other camp…
There are also Star Trek bathrobes available in soft cotton and toasty microfleece. The manufacturer listings will tell you they come in Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and Uhura styles, but whatever – let’s call them Commander, Science Officer, Engineer, and Operations. It’s a much more logical system of nomenclature, as any Vulcan can tell you.
You know what this is? Yeah, a Harry Potter scarf. A Gryffindor scarf, to be exact. It’s also luxurious, large, and guaranteed to keep your neck toasty on a frosty day. Available in each of the House’s colors, this is a shoe-in for your wannabe Hogwarts attendant or alumnus.
Who can say no to a garish, knitted hat with a pompon and earflaps? Perhaps someone with style, but certainly not a geek with a burning love for Firefly. Snag one of the many, many reproductions of this littering Etsy and the like, and then brace yourself for a rousing round of “The Hero of Canton.”
(Jayne hat featured is from Redshirt Knitting.)
This concludes our haphazard guide to gift-giving through the geography of geek chic! We hope you found something shiny for your giftee – if not, there’s one last guide coming on Monday: GeekDame’s Holiday Gift-Giving Guide for the Discerning Geek: The Final Countdown Edition!
